Schools

  • Four school boards: Toronto has English public (TDSB) and Catholic (TCDSB) boards, plus the French boards Viamonde and MonAvenir.
  • Toronto District School Board: Canada's largest board, with about 470 elementary and 110 secondary schools.

Parks and recreation

  • High Park: About 161 hectares with Grenadier Pond, trails and a zoo.
  • James Gardens: Public garden on the Humber River in Etobicoke.
  • Humber River Recreation Trail: Popular west-end trail for walkers and cyclists.
  • Humber Bay Park: Etobicoke waterfront park with meadows and lake views.

Shopping and dining

  • Bloor West Village: Over 400 shops, restaurants and services between Jane Street and Ellis Park Road.
  • The Junction: Dundas Street West strip of patios and independent shops.
  • CF Sherway Gardens: Etobicoke mall near Highway 427 and the QEW.
  • Yorkdale Shopping Centre: At Highway 401 and Allen Road, next to Yorkdale subway station.

Getting around

Subway Line 1 serves Yorkdale and the northwest, and Line 2 serves Bloor West Village. UP Express runs from Union to Pearson every 15 minutes, stopping at Bloor and Weston. GO's Milton and Lakeshore West lines serve Kipling, Mimico and Long Branch. Line 6 Finch West and Line 5 Eglinton are now open, and the Gardiner, QEW, 401 and 427 handle drivers.

What is changing

  • Line 6 Finch West: Opened December 2025: 18 stops from Finch West station to Humber College.
  • Line 5 Eglinton: The Eglinton Crosstown opened to riders in February 2026.
  • Ontario Line: Under construction, with tunnelling under way and opening expected in the early 2030s.

Yes. Toronto's west end has big parks like High Park and James Gardens, the Humber River trail, four publicly funded school boards and walkable main streets like Bloor West Village and The Junction.

How do I get to downtown Toronto from Toronto?

From the west end, take subway Line 2 or Line 1 downtown, or a GO train from Kipling, Mimico or Long Branch to Union Station. UP Express from Bloor or Weston reaches Union in a few stops.
